Project Duration: Three Years
Plant Quantity: 1,000,000
Kauri Park Nurseries were initially awarded the project knowing the volume and value would have an element of flexibility involved. As the motorway extension is being constructed, areas of "cut and fill" can change in size , dictating plant volumes. In addition, the length of the earthwork season proceeding the planting season is another factor to area and volumes. Seasonal planting numbers cannot be fully determined until the planting season is in progress.
Alput demanded huge amounts of flexibility and foresight. Kauri Park grows additional percentages of each species every season to cover the possibility of extra being needed.
As the project has evolved, species lists have changed. The soil types in the "cut and fill" zones are poor ancient clay types. This is a limiting factor to many species in survival. Losses in initial trial stages showed that the range and species diversity must be narrowed to ensure success. Ultimately, nature itself will control the regeneration process.
