The abilities to remove suspended solids and dissolved pollutants such as heavy metals are an ability of the Treatment Wetland. The process is named "Bio Remediation".
Total Suspended Solids (TSS) flowing through storm water that come in contact with the Bio Films attached to the plant zones, become adhered to the Bio Film. Floating Treatment Wetlands are based on surface area to achieve the Bio Remediation.
Heavy Metals and other pollutant type elements mostly are attached to the TSS in the storm water. A basic understanding is that the pollutants attach to the fine to colloidal particles within the TSS. 80% of the pollutants are adhered to 20% of the total volume of the TSS. This 20% of the TSS is the fine to almost colloidal faction.
